The person behind Simplific

Hello, I’m James.

I help people find a practical way to build the software they have in mind.

Making software simpler, from the first conversation.

Experience, built over time

Curiosity started it.
Experience shaped it.

~22years building software
~15years professionally

I caught the bug as a teenager, tinkering with RuneScape and learning to make code do what I wanted. I’ve been developing software for around 22 years now, about 15 of them professionally.

Across the whole system.

I’ve built websites, desktop applications and mobile apps. My experience spans technical consultancy, business process modelling and building both internal systems and customer-facing software. As a full-stack developer, I work across the interface people use and the systems behind it, drawing on different programming languages and approaches to suit the problem.

How I work

A clear way forward.

My work can involve technical advice, design, development or improving an existing system. What connects it is the aim: understanding what you want to achieve and finding a clear way forward.

Tell me about your idea ↗

You bring the ambition.

Your idea and your knowledge of the problem you want to solve.

I bring the technical thinking.

The thinking and care needed to help shape it into something useful.

Personal experiments

Go on. Play a little.

Patterns, geometry and a cheerful frog. These are things I make for fun — open one, change the settings and see what happens.

Beyond the day job

I still make things
just to see what happens.

I have a City & Guilds qualification in electronic engineering, have programmed microcontrollers, and enjoy 3D printing and modifying games consoles in my spare time. Sometimes an idea becomes software; sometimes it ends up on the workbench.

These are personal projects and experiments, made out of curiosity rather than company case studies. Some are older or unfinished — they show the things I enjoy exploring.

Sound / Node.js

NodeSynth ↗

An audio synthesis library for exploring oscillators, waveforms and sound made in code.

Games / Java

Grimja ↗

A library and editing toolkit for working with Grim Fandango’s game assets.

Hardware / C++

3dPrintr ↗

Experimental AVR firmware for a 3D printer, including G-code and stepper-motor control.

Graphics / Java

nengine ↗

An early 3D software renderer I wrote at 16, exploring models, transformations and drawing them on screen.
